Blessed are those whose way is blameless,
who walk in the law of the Lord!
Blessed are those who keep his testimonies,
who seek him with their whole heart,
who also do no wrong,
but walk in his ways!
You have commanded your precepts
to be kept diligently.
Oh that my ways may be steadfast
in keeping your statutes!
Then I shall not be put to shame,
having my eyes fixed on all your commandments.
I will praise you with an upright heart,
when I learn your righteous rules.
I will keep your statutes;
do not utterly forsake me! Psalm 119:1-8 (ESV)
Jumpstart the New Year
My church has a cool tradition that is designed to help all of us jumpstart a new year and get off to a good start. Here’s what we do. During January, we allot 21 days for prayer and fasting. The church creates a devotional booklet with 21 entries so each of us can set a habit of spending time each day in God’s word. The devotionals are also posted on the church Facebook page (Grace Church Fairview) daily during the 21 days.
What is the path to a Christ-Centered Life?
The bible and prayer are at the center of a Christ-centered life. These are the two primary ways of connecting relationally with our Creator. In addition, fasting is an act of obedience and devotion, one that is commanded in scripture.
How are We to Fast?
In Matthew 6, Jesus Himself talks about how to fast:
“And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6:16-18 (ESV)
So, the bible, prayer, and fasting are what we start the year with at our church. You are welcome to join us – each day’s bible passage will be posted on the Grace Church Fairview Facebook page. I will try to make sure to share it on the Devotion in Action Facebook group each day.
What Bible Study Method to Use?
This year, we are employing a great method for bible study. This method is super easy but very effective. It is perfect for newbies and experienced bible scholars. It is fantastic for moving from just reading the word of God to living it.
The SOAP Method
This method is called S.O.A.P. The word of God can help to wash us clean as it renews our minds, transforming our lives.
S.O.A.P. stands for:
S – Scripture:
Choose a passage of scripture and read it; really read it, rather than just skimming it or speed-reading it. Think about the words and what they mean.
O – Observation:
The bible is God’s word to His people. So, what does this passage reveal to you about God or the people described in it?
A – Application:
How does the passage apply to your life? What is God nudging you to change through this particular area of scripture? What wisdom can you apply to your life to make it better? Is there a call to action or command? How is God encouraging you through this part of His word?
P – Prayer:
It is time to connect with God through conversation. Because you’ve read and reflected on the passage above, you have something to talk to God about. Yay! Tell God thank you for His word, ask Him to help you understand difficult parts, or discuss something you read with Him. Take some time to listen. This can be hard at first. Get quiet and listen to what thoughts God brings to your mind. Maybe He will direct you to a different area of scripture. Feel free to write down whatever revelations you receive from God.
Read Through Psalm 119
In our booklet this year, we are reading through Psalm 119. The beginning of this passage talks of the law of the Lord, God’s testimonies, the Lord’s precepts, etc. When we stay in His word, we are blessed in return. I don’t know about you, but I like being on the receiving end of God’s blessings. 🙂
You don’t have to be a part of my church to start your year off in God’s blessings. Just dive in to His word.
Action Step:
If you want to, join the Devotion in Action Facebook page here or the Grace Church Fairview Facebook page here. If not, choose a passage of scripture and find a notebook or journal for reflection. Let’s establish some habits at the start of this year to move ourselves into the blessings of God.
Prayer:
Dear God, thank You that You nudge us toward connection with You. You are always reaching out to us. Help us to reach back to You. Let Your word come alive to us this year. Help us to hear Your voice and to do Your will. In Jesus’ name, amen.
