The Rock, his work is perfect,
for all his ways are justice.
A God of faithfulness and without iniquity,
just and upright is he. Deuteronomy 32:4 (ESV)
There is a craze going on all around the country this year. Have you seen painted rocks popping up all over your town? Where we live, they are nestled alongside businesses, tucked in landscaping at government buildings, and all over the local parks. Embracing a way express creativity and spread a little joy, people of all ages are painting rocks and hiding them all over the place.
It is a little ridiculous how excited we all get when we find one. It is just a little thing. Just a tiny rock. But it brings a smile. A way to give and receive joy.
There is a difference between these little painted rocks and a mountain. A mountain is still a rock, but it is still a rock. A very large rock.
When I was a kid, we always vacationed in Colorado. I will never forget climbing all over the Rocky Mountains. There is something that feels really permanent in among the mountains. It seems as if those large rocks have always been there and always will be there. Permanence. Faithfulness. Strength. Endurance.
The bible calls God our Rock. Perfect. Strong. Just. Faithful. Just like those gigantic mountains.
My God. My Rock. Perfect, faithful, strong.
He is not just a mountain in the distance. We can lean on Him. Depend on him. Rest on Him. He supports us and surrounds us.
When it feels like the world is shaking. When it feels like the floods overwhelm us. When it feels like the fire consumes us. When it feels like life is overtaking us.
Our God is always present, always faithful. He is our protection and defense. He is our Rock.
Dear God, thank you for being a steady, secure, and faithful rock in my life when other things feel insecure. You are always faithful, always strong, always perfect. Help me to lean on You and not on my own strength. In Jesus’ name, amen.
