Mixed Media Bible Art Journaling in John 4 – From intimidating to invigorating…

I have to admit…I am a YouTube junkie. Yep, admitting it is the first step. I love to watch artists creating amazing things in their YouTube videos. Bible art journaling and other art – I like all of it. Lately, a lot of my favorite YouTube artists have been doing mixed media projects. Mixed media totally intimidated me. I wasn’t sure what I was doing at all. But it was fun! Gluing and painting and all kinds of fun. It was like being in elementary school during craft time again. Rather freeing! And now I am positive I will be doing it again.

Step-By-Step

The first step if you are ovewhelmed or intimidated by starting a mixed media project is to just start. Once you get going, the next step is to keep going. At first, nothing will look right. The key is to keeping adding stuff until it looks good to you. Don’t stop when it doesn’t look finished. Keep going! Oh, and it helps to dry between layers because this can get really, really wet with lots of layers.

Bits and Pieces and Paints and Gesso – The Tools in Your Toolkit

Mixed media simply means that you used a variety of art mediums in a single art project. So what can you use? The simple answer is anything you want. I like bits and pieces of book pages and magazine pictures, watercolors(my go-to field set), acrylic paints (here is what I use), gesso (my favorite one is here), and pens (some great ones for bible art journaling).

How to Choose What to Use in Your Mixed Media Project

Granted, I am a newbie to the whole mixed media thing, but the motto I am adopting when it comes to choosing the media I will use is “Use stuff you like.” Basically, I love music, and music is integral to a personal story I used in the devotional for John 5. So I pulled a page out of an old hymnal that had been given to me in order to create elements on this page. I also paged through magazines to find textures and colors that I thought would do a good job representing the different parts I knew I wanted to create, such as the water and the stone steps. You can choose whatever makes your heart happy!

You can make it your own in any way you want! Choose different patterns, different colors, or totally recreate it – there are no wrong answers when it comes to art. Make something meaningful to you and that helps you remember God’s word, living and active in your life. That’s what bible art journaling is all about.
