December Devotions and Doodles – Day 24 (December 24)
Scripture Reading: Matthew 1:22-25
22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
23 See, the virgin will become pregnant
and give birth to a son,
and they will name him Immanuel,
which is translated “God is with us.”
24 When Joseph woke up, he did as the Lord’s angel had commanded him. He married her 25 but did not have sexual relations with her until she gave birth to a son. And he named him Jesus.
December 24 Devotional: His Name is Jesus
Christmas Eve is always crazy for our family. My husband is a worship pastor and I also lead worship. On Christmas Eve, our church always has three services, so we are at church pretty much all day.
Remembering the Name
Sometimes in the business of the day, people come up to me and I totally blank out on their name. I try, but my memory does not always cooperate with me. I am stuck smiling and wondering why I can’t remember this person’s name that I have met a hundred times before. So frustrating!
The One Important Name
This year, it strikes me that there is one name that I can’t afford to forget. His name is Jesus. The Bible tells us that Joseph and Mary received instructions from Heaven on what to name this Savior who came to earth.
The Name Above All Names
For this reason God highly exalted him
and gave him the name
that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus
every knee will bow—
in heaven and on earth
and under the earth—
11 and every tongue will confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9
The Father has exalted the name of Jesus above all other names. Everyone in heaven and earth with bow to the name given to the Baby Jesus because that Baby would be the Messiah – the Anointed One to save people.
Power in the Name
There is power in the name of Jesus because there is power in the person of Jesus. Power to conquer death. Power over sin. Power to heal. Power to rescue. Power to provide. Power we need.
Call Upon the Name
And he named him Jesus.
His name is Jesus. We come to the Father in the Name of Jesus. We call for help in the Name of Jesus. Today as we excitedly await Christmas tomorrow…and always.
December 24 – Action Step:
Today (December 24), is there something you need? Really need. Healing, deliverance, help, peace, joy, forgiveness – ask the Father in the name of Jesus and watch expectantly for the answer. Just like the promised Messiah, God has an answer for our needs.
Prayer:
Dear God, thank You that You gave Jesus the name above every other name. We can ask in His name and You hear and answer us. Thank You for sending Your Son. We are grateful now and always. In Jesus’ name, amen.
