December 17 – The Light
4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light. 9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. John 1:4-9
The Light (December 17)
My daughter and I love candles. We like the ones with wonderful aromas and three wicks that can light up a room. In fact, we just bought new candles and have been enjoying how they make our home feel more Christmas-y.
However, there are different kinds of light. For instance, our good-smelling candles can’t hold a candle (pardon the pun) to the light of the sun. The sun’s light is necessary to sustain all life on earth. Plants use it to make their food, which in turn is our food. The sun is the perfect distance from the earth to create the right temperatures for human life.
Light and life
Light and life are connected to one another. Jesus is Light. Jesus is Life. Both are alive in the Son of God.
When the Light that is Jesus is introduced into our lives, eternal life is made possible. Light and life.
For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
Telling people about the Light
This passage in John 1 tells us more about John (the son of Zechariah and Elizabeth). His calling and purpose was to tell people about the coming of the Messiah.
He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light. 9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. John 1:7-9
Who do we tell about the Light?
Are we like John? Do we tell others about the Light that can bring Life?
Why wouldn’t we want everyone to have that Life in them? There is so much darkness in the world today? The Light of Jesus can push back the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome the Light of the World.
We can coworkers, friends, and family members who are drowning in darkness right now. We have the Light that can push back that darkness and bring Life and Joy.
December 17 Devotional Action Step:
Reach out and offer the Light of Jesus to someone in your life today. It doesn’t have to be pushy. You can share what Jesus has done in your own life or just plant a seed about what is possible with Him. But, take some action today towards being like John the Baptist and sharing Jesus with others.
Prayer:
Dear God, You have sent Light and Life into my life and gave me a purpose and calling to help others find that Light and Life too. Help me to have to courage to speak up about Your Son. In Jesus’ name, amen.
