Overview:
Who is writing it? Paul is writing it to Timothy.
Paul is getting older. Timothy is a young pastor at the church of Ephesus. Timothy had traveled with Paul on his second missionary journey. Paul has set Timothy in leadership at Ephesus because there has been some false teaching, division, and sects of people straying from the truth in this church body. He didn’t want to leave the church there without leadership that he trusts.
Contents of 1 Timothy:
This letter gives many wonderful instructions to church leadership and even specific types of people in the church (e.g., slaves, deacons, overseers, old and young widows, rich, elders, men, women, etc). It also gives wise direction to young church leaders, and when considered by older church members, can be helpful in knowing how to treat those church leaders who are younger than we are.
In addition, the letter of 1 Timothy gives encouragement to Timothy who seems to have confidence issues and health problems, as well as discouragement.
If we are feeling discouraged and weary of doing the right thing. If we are doing what we believe God is telling us to and meeting with trouble and strife. If it seems like the work to be done is overwhelming and too big for us.
We can relate to Timothy and learn from Paul’s advice to him.
