—”I think, therefore I am.” -Rene Descartes—
I read a statistic recently that said between 30,000 and 50,000 thoughts enter our minds during the course of an average day. Wow! That is a lot of work for this brain of mine! Most people have the mindset that ‘every thought is valid.’ They go through life believing that what they think about is uncontrollable. Whatever thought pops into their heads is the one they entertain.
However, God did not put us at the mercy of our thoughts. In fact, it is the opposite. Our thoughts are under our control. I know this because the bible tells us what to think about.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8
“Think about these things.”
If you have spent your whole life thinking whatever pops into your head, the task of directing and organizing your thoughts can be overwhelming. After all, constant vigilance is needed when you are talking about 30,000 to 50,000 thoughts that range from “I need soda and a candy bar right now” to “I always mess this up” to “That song on the radio is so annoying”. Whew! Just thinking about what we think about is exhausting!
Learning a new behavior
Struggles with worry, self-doubt, anxiety, lack of self-control are often a symptom of the larger issue of not controlling a wandering thought life. The great news is that controlling your thoughts is a learned behavior that can transform so many areas of your life. I know that when I am in control of my thought life, every other area of my life improves.
