What is Lent, anyway?
I grew up in a Christian home. We were faithful members of a modern evangelical church. I had no idea what Lent was. Absolutely. No. Idea. It just wasn’t observed.
About six years ago, I started teaching part-time at a Catholic school. March rolled around, and suddenly it was Ash Wednesday launching into the Lenten Season (or Lent).
I wanted to know what it was.
Traditional Lent
What I learned was that Lent is a liturgical season marked by repentance, prayer, fasting, and giving to others. It fills the 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday, the start of Holy Week. It is really that simple! Just 40 days for us to draw near to God.
This Lenten Season is seen by traditional, orthodox churches as a time to connect with God and prepare our hearts for Easter.
This year, I wanted to do some small daily devotionals for Lent that focus on the five parts of Lent.
Five Parts to Lent:
1. Prayer – communicating with God
2. Repentance – Confessing our sins and asking for forgiveness
3. Fasting – giving up something and replacing that thing with connecting to God through prayer or bible reading
4. Giving to others – helping others with time, talents, or money
5. Steps toward Easter – The story of Easter, starting at Palm Sunday
Here’s How it Will Work
I created 40 free printables of word art for Lent based on the scripture passages I’ve chosen for each of the 40 days.
Each day, you read the short passages along with me and check out the short devotional designed to help us grow in prayer, repentance, fasting, and giving to others. The steps toward Easter days will prepare our hearts for the Easter celebration. Then, the week before Easter (between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday), we will review those steps to Easter.
It’s going to be great!
By Easter, we will be closer and more connected to the God we love so much!
